We initially made the mistake of thinking of Florence only as a gateway to the rest of Tuscany. Little did we realise that its architecture, food and cobblestone alleyways would completely bowl us over. Four magnificent days later, Florence had swiftly ratcheted its way up to the very top of our favourite getaways list. Though I suspect the more we travel, the longer that list is going to be.
Florence is easily accessed by train from Rome (under 2 hours) and also serviced by most of the large European carriers (Air France, Lufthansa/Swiss Air). Although easy to get to, we would still recommend spending a minimum of 4 nights in this beautiful destination.
