Coonoor

The second largest hill station in the Nilgiris is second only in size. Coonoor comes out way ahead of its larger cousin - Ooty both in terms of sheer beauty and absolute tranquility.

Coonoor is a destination that one of us Vacationists has spent many a childhood summer at. However, it continues to be a place we frequent, both out of nostalgia as well as for the escape that it offers from the humdrum city life. It also helps that getting here is easy. A comfortable, two-hour or 79-kilometre drive from Coimbatore brings you to Coonoor. This is a scenic drive, once you start the ascent, with 14 hairpin bends and courteous drivers who respect and understand the rules of the road unlike those in the northern parts of India.

Like most Indian hill stations – Lower Coonoor has fallen prey to uncontrolled and unplanned development and has entirely lost its charm. However, a short 5-minute drive from the chaos of the market, brings you to Upper Coonoor and the military cantonment area of Wellington. This is where we like to make our base. Breathe in the clean air, inhale the strong scent of the tea leaves, enjoy the crisp, cold weather and go on long walks. A trip to these Southern hills will certainly recharge your batteries.
